It takes a split second for something to change someone’s entire life. Komal Bora’s life is an example of just that. One dreadful road accident at the age of 19 year changed the entire course of komal’s life. Komal and her aunt were on their way to Rajasthan. They were looking forward to meet their loved ones upon reaching but fate had something else planned for them. The car was moving at normal speed and was on the right side of the road. But as luck would have it, a speeding heavy truck came from the wrong side and collided with their car. The impact of it was so bad that both Komal and her aunt came hurling out of the car. The car was smashed beyond recognition leaving her aunt died on the spot. It was a miracle that passersby found Komal still breathing and rushed her to the hospital. She was kept under observation for 24 hours. As her recovery progressed, the doctors examined her and detected that she had a Spinal Cord Injury at the D-10 and D-11 level.
Komal was transferred to another hospital where for the next six months, she was completely bedridden. Many doctors examined her condition and declared that her chances of improving are less. That was but of course news that brought her family great dismay. Soon after, one of their relatives directed them towards about NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute. That is when they set out to contact Dr. Alok Sharma and Dr. Nandini Gokulchandran.
Patient’s life after treatment at NeuroGen
Komal’s parents were initially aware of the fact that their daughter had to undergo stem cell therapy. But Dr. Alok Sharma assured them and explained them about the therapy at length. So finally on June 2009, Komal underwent Stem Cell Therapy. This was yet another milestone added on to the threshold of her journey. Other than that, she underwent a rehabilitation program too. The therapist taught her to roll, sit with her legs stretched on the bed, do balance training and move back to and fro. After the therapy, she could independently take bath, groom herself, eat, dress and do toileting. She could move from the bed to her wheelchair without taking support and she could walk with the aid of splinters and walker. Komal could move around her wheelchair on her own and she could do all the household chores like cooking, cleaning and sewing without taking help.
How did it impact the lives of those around her?
Komal has put the past behind her and everything that happened to her eight years ago but is ever grateful to all the doctors of NeuroGen. Not one to give up easily, this young woman continued to strive and went on doing what she loved doing the best. She had a dream wedding with her husband Rohit Ostwal. Komal exclaims that it was like a Bollywood movie for her as her husband carried her off. Currently, Komal is the proud owner of a boutique where she displays designer ethnic wear like saris and lehengas. A year back, she even participated in Miss. Wheelchair India contest. Her story is truly inspiring for many. All her past trials have turned into a memory but it will remain engraved in every heart for centuries together. And to see their daughter beat the odds has been nothing short of a treat for her parents.
