Dementia is a term used to define a decline in the mental strength of a person that interferes with his/her daily living. Dementia is a group of symptoms that can affect the person’s memory, reasoning, mood and behaviour. It develops when the area of the brain that governs the areas that involve cognitive, communication, memory and learning are affected. For Dementia, stem cell treatment is the only way to revive the lost memory and help the person lead a normal life.
What causes dementia?
Brain cell death is associated with most dementias. Brain cell death can be the result of a head injury, stroke or a brain tumour amongst other reasons. It can be termed as:
- Vascular dementia (or multi-infarct dementia): This results from brain cell death due to a cered stroke that prevents normal blood flow to the brain cells.
- Injury: Post various traumatic incidents, dementia that surface is directly related to the damage of the brain cells caused by the injury.
Early signs of dementia
Some of the early signs of dementia include:
- A short-term memory
- Frequent change in mood
- Trouble finding the right words to express or say
- Apathy
- Hallucinations
- Sense of confusion when doing an errand
- Inability to accomplish the daily task
- Poor sense of direction (may forget the way back to his/her home)
The mesenchymal stem cells are specialized cells that can grow into any cell type like the bone, brain cells or the skeletal muscles. These cells also support the growth of new stem cells, neuro protection and angiogenesis to recover the person’s lost memory, thinking ability and cognitive skill.
At NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute, individuals suffering from different forms of dementia are treated using mesenchymal stem cells derived from the bone marrow of the patients. The entire dementia, stem cell treatment involves 3 steps wherein:
- Local anaesthesia is applied to the hip bone area. Using an aspiration needle, about 80 to 120 ml of marrow is derived from the hip bone. The exact amount is determined by the age and weight of the patient. The removed bone marrow is then transferred to the laboratory for filtration.
- The filtration and purification process is accomplished with ‘density gradient centrifugation’ method to filter the stem cell from the marrow on the basis of their density.
- The filtered stem cells are diluted in CSF and infused into the spinal area using an intrathecal injection attached with an epidural needle.
At NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute, the entire staff is committed to provide the most advanced treatment to treat a host of neurological disorders and muscular diseases. Apart from cell treatment, they offer services such as physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, behaviour therapy, yoga therapy along with a perfect diet plan to treat children with autism. Here the patients receive a warm and friendly environment, swift diagnosis, and comprehensive treatment.
