Only injury during birth causes cerebral palsy

Cerebral palsy can be caused due to either a birth injury or a birth defect  or any injury to the brain within 2 years of age. A brain injury usually occurs when a child’s brain is damaged due to lack of oxygen during labor and delivery. A birth defect on the other hand is usually caused to the fetus due to factors like infections and genetic malformations. The primary cause of congenital cerebral palsy is due to brain damage that has happened before or during birth.

Only about 50% of individuals diagnosed with cerebral palsy may have intellectual disability . In fact, some individuals have above par intelligence.
